Mrs. Maughan, a ninth-grade English teacher, said, “I’m not sure when the tradition started but 13 years ago, when I was in junior high, we went to Lagoon too. It’s a fun end of year reward and celebration.”  All staff and students (if the students don’t have any non made up sluffs or tardies)  are invited to go spend a fun-filled day at the large amusement park in Farmington. Danny Salazar, a ninth grader, said, “I go so I can hang out with my friends and have fun. We also get to see teachers dressed up normal and it’s like ‘oh my gosh! You are normal!’ The school takes us to reward us for being awesome and to say thanks for paying and being good.”

In Mrs. Maughan’s ninth-grade English classes at Springville Junior High, she and her students are switching places for a while.  During the last two weeks of school, students have gotten the opportunity to become the teacher for five minutes by giving a lesson on any topic of their choice.  “The Utah State Core Curriculum requires that ninth-grade students complete an oral presentation,” said Mrs. Maughan. “This is one of the ways I like to meet that objective.”  According to Mrs. Maughan, she also did this with her ninth-grade classes last year.  So far, the presentations have been very popular with students.

3...2...1... Blast off! The eighth-grade students in Mr. Dahl’s science class at Springville Junior High had the opportunity to shoot off rockets on Friday 17 out in the field by the skatepark. Mr. Dahl said, “Rocketry is something I’m really interested, in and it’s fun project to do at the end of the year.”

The students got into groups and then Mr. Dahl gave them a rocket kit. The students then had a few days to work on it until they launched the rockets. Natalie Sumsion, an eighth-grade student at SJHS, said, “It was fun but hard at the same time. If you make one mistake you could ruin your whole rocket.”

On Monday, April 29 the three SJHS Orchestras went to the Utah Valley University orchestra Festival. According to Alyssa Oman, a member of ninth-grade orchestra, all the orchestra students get to go to UVU to listen and perform in front of other schools and judges. The festival lasts all day and is very exciting. Shelby Smith, an eighth-grade orchestra member, said, “We go so we can improve. The judges tell us what we did wrong and it helps a lot. It is also a good opportunity to be graded by someone other than our teacher and play for people our own age.”
