SJHS Dance Class Gets Moving!

Submitted by tiffanie.miley on

Springville Junior High’s dance class has been working hard to learn steps, rhythm, and all different types of dances. The dance class is an elective class that the eighth and ninth grade boys and girls can take to express themselves in another way. Each semester, new kids come into the class to learn the dances and show what talents they have with technique and how well they can follow the steps given. Mrs. Maughan, the dance teacher, said, “Dance is an elective, and the main point is to learn an appreciation for dance and movement.

BYU Surveys SJHS Students

Submitted by tiffanie.miley on

Early this April during their English classes, students at Springville Junior High took an online survey in the computer labs about their school.  The survey was created by Dr. Erin Whiting, a professor of Teacher Education and Multicultural and Inclusive Education at BYU.  Dr. Whiting met with the SJHS administration, counselors, and Ms. Miley, an SJHS English teacher, last summer to see what kind of information they were interested in learning about SJHS students.  Based on those conversations, Dr. Whiting assembled the survey for students to take.  “The purpose [of the survey] was to gather information about how students are connecting with the school,” said Mr. Van Ausdal, principal at SJHS.

Submitted by tiffanie.miley on

On April 11, all of the ninth grade students who had good physical fitness testing scores were able to go on a field trip. They were treated to a rock climbing activity at the Quarry in Provo, lunch from Brick Oven, and games in the Indoor Practice Facility at BYU. The games that they played at the BYU facility were soccer, ultimate frisbee, and football.

Mystery Foods

Submitted by tiffanie.miley on

At Springville Junior High there is a new activity in foods called the “mystery lab.” Usually students get an apron, wash their hands, know what they're going to make in their kitchens, and can ask questions about how to cook whatever they're making that day,  but not in this case. Students to get the ingredients, and without knowing what they're making, try their best to make it! The students need to measure the ingredients right and follow the directions correctly with their group. They also can’t ask questions, and if they do Mrs. Murray, Mrs. Luke, or Ms. Fausett won't answer. It is a great idea for students to learn how to cook without any help and follow the instructions without messing up.

Mrs. Maughan’s Classes Make Pithy Tees

Submitted by tiffanie.miley on

SJHS students may have noticed all of the paper t-shirts outside of Mrs. Maughan’s classroom. Her class recently completed their “pithy t-shirts,” a project where students picked a poem of their choice, and chose a “pithy” sentence out of that poem. According to Mrs. Maughan, an English teacher at SJHS, a “pith” is usually a line of great meaning or significance. She said, “Students then create a t-shirt from their statement with a corresponding design or picture.  T-shirts in real life often have silly statements or pictures... these have more meaning!”

Students Rewarded for Being on Time

Submitted by tiffanie.miley on

Students at SJHS are working hard to get to class on time. Here at Springville Junior High, students are rewarded for their good behavior of getting no tardies for one term. The students with no tardies recently celebrated on April 9th. Jillian Boyer, an eighth grader at SJHS who attended the party, said, “It’s a great way to reward kids for no tardies. We went and saw a movie and got to buy concessions while we were there.” The students saw the movie “Escape from Planet Earth,” and most students seemed to enjoy it.

Super Knights Go To a Super Place

Submitted by tiffanie.miley on

EXTRA! EXTRA! The Springville Junior High Super Knights went to Boondocks! On March 22, Mr. Mikesell, Mrs. Caras, and Ms. Hamilton took all of the Super Knights from the 2012-13 school year to Boondocks in Draper. Mr. Mikesell, the SJHS dean of students, said, “Taking the Super Knights to Boondocks is to reward them for all they do.” Boondocks is a place where students could take part in many activities such as go-karts, mini golf, laser tag, bumper boats, and games in the arcade. Cater Call, a seventh-grade Super Knight, said, “Boondocks is a fun center with go-karts, a restaurant, and an XD theater. It was very fun.”

Writers take a stand

Submitted by tiffanie.miley on

Do you want to write the school newspaper? Well you can have a chance to write for the newspaper in an elective class: Journalism. In Journalism you get to interview students, take pictures, and write articles. You can take Journalism in eighth or ninth grade, but you have to have an application when you are registering. Those who have joined Journalism have loved it. “I took Journalism last year and, last semester and I really enjoyed it. At first, I wasn’t used to having deadlines and stuff, but it got easier,” said Marin Rosenberg, a Journalism student.

Mousetraps with Wheels!

Submitted by tiffanie.miley on

Get the wheels in your head turning!  The eighth graders recently made mousetrap cars at SJHS.  In mid-April the eighth grade just finished their unit on simple machines in science.  As the eighth graders finished up with their inventions of mouse trap cars, we were all impressed by the results of this year’s mousetrap cars.  According to Mr. Kindrick, a science teacher at SJHS, the science teachers want the students to understand simple machines and how they can make our work easier.
