Master Singers Perform National Anthem at BYU Game

Submitted by jennifer.dunn on

“Oh, say can you see” Ms. Utrera’s choir singing at a BYU Basketball game? On January 27th at 9:00, the Master Singers lined up on the Marriott Center basketball court, and sang the National Anthem to the hundreds of fans cheering on the BYU Cougars. The students had a blast-- from watching basketball players warm up, to sing-off’s with employees; it was a super enjoyable experience.

Preparing the song took a lot of hard work, patience and effort. Ms. Utrera, the choir teacher at SJHS, said, “We prepared for six months to sing at the game. Preparation included learning and practicing in class, as well as performing it a few times [in concerts].”

Less Assemblies, More Awards

Submitted by jennifer.dunn on

The students and staff of SJHS gathered around in the cafetorium Tuesday, January 19th, for an assembly to see who among their peers would be known as the next Super Knights. Twelve students were chosen from November and December 2015 to receive the award. Super Knight assemblies are made to honor students. SJHS used to hold a Super Knight assembly once a month, but now, we hold it once every two months and to honor more students we give Chivalry Awards. “We wanted to do more to recognize students,” said Mr. Rowley, the assistant principal of SJHS.

On January 6, 2016, the kids in P.E. had the choice to go on an ice skating field trip to the Seven Peaks Ice Arena and then to the Provo Towne Center to eat lunch afterward. The field trip cost fifteen dollars and the junior high students got a pair of rental skates and skated for several hours. Ms. Gausher, Mr. Parker, and Mr. Chambers, SJHS P.E. teachers, went on the field trip with the students and skated a little bit too.

Who’s Hungry to Learn About the Lunch Ladies?

Submitted by jennifer.dunn on

What is your favorite place in the school? For many students it is the cafeteria, and our hard working lunch ladies make it even more awesome.

Rachell Chapple, the lunchroom manager, said, “Being part of the cafeteria staff is like having nine sisters. We work hard and we have to work rather quick, but in and among all of the craziness we have a lot of fun.” According to Debbie Messick, the lunch clerk, the best thing about it is that it is fun and enjoyable, and they like to prepare the food and see the smiling faces of the students.

Ninth graders at SJHS had a chance to take English honors, an advanced English class this year. In order to take the class, students had to complete a summer reading assignment and turn it in on the first week of school.

“Honors English is for students who can read and write at a high level, but who are also very hardworking and responsible,” said Ms. Dunn, the English honors teacher at SJHS.

SJHS Has The Greatest Students

Submitted by jennifer.dunn on

Here at SJHS, we have outstanding students!  Jenessa Crystal, an eighth grader here, is a great example of that. Emma Rich, an eighth grader at SJHS, said, “I like the happiness around her and the love she shares.”

According to Jenessa, a few of her hobbies are reading, playing the piano, and playing club volleyball.  She loves going camping with her family.  She said,  “I also do fiddle band which is during Quest Time.”  According to Kaylee Larsen,  an eighth grader at SJHS, the three things Jenessa is really good at are the three S’s: sleeping, soccer, and sports.   She enjoys acting, and the summer after fourth grade, she and her friends put together the play Matilda.
