Dear SJHS parents and guardians:

Welcome to Christmas break! I just wanted to share a couple pieces of information with you prior to the new year:

  • The end of term 2 will be on Thursday, January 14. There will be nine school days after the break before the end of the term.
  • If you would like to switch from at-school to remote learning for term 3, or from remote learning to at-school learning, please complete this survey prior to January 5. (If you do not want to make any changes, you do not need to complete the survey.)
  • Governor Herbert announced updated COVID-19 guidelines yesterday. Details about the new guidelines can be found in the state COVID-19 School Manual Summary. You should have also received an email from Nebo School District with information about the changes.

Please enjoy our 7th, 8th, and 9th grade band concerts, and our choir concert. We hope that you and your families have a wonderful holiday season!

Take care,

Hillary and Heather Weakley are identical twins. From what they wear to what they say to what they look like. Hillary says the best thing about being twins is, ¨You always have a permanent best friend.¨ Heather explains it as a ¨A built-in BFF wherever we go.¨ Hillary says that there are no bad things about being a twin. On the other hand, Heather says that ¨Like normal siblings we fight sometimes.¨ Heather likes to wrestle and Hillary likes to dance. They both like soccer and being with friends. As Heather puts it “We are both just happy people!” They love each other and are so glad to have each other!

He’s Fun, He’s Smart, He's Helpful: It’s Mr. Hammon!

We all know Mr. Hammon, the health teacher at Springville Jr. High. How could you not! Even if you don’t have him, you’ve heard of him from your friends. Matt Hammon, known to us as Mr. Hammon, has been teaching health for six years. He decided to teach health because he wanted time for his family and health because "It's most applicable to life." His favorite part of teaching is when he helps kids to help them learn and change their lives for the better. Every year he always tries to make lessons better and more informative for his students. In addition to that this year, his goal is to help students with COVID-19 stress. Mr. Hammon's advice for us is simple but important, "Be kind." Mr. Hammon's students love him, and he teaches really fun lessons like learning "how to flirt'' using things you learn in health. We love Mr. Hammon and hope that he stays at SJHS for a long time.

All About Sabrina!

Sabrina is one of the many talented ninth graders here at Springville Jr. High. Sabrina is always very bright and willing to help others. In her free time, she likes to draw and play the ukulele. Sabrina is enjoying her ninth grade year here at SJHS and enjoys being in band and student council. She wanted to join the student council for the chance to be able to make a difference and be in a group with similar interests to hers. Sabrina is very hopeful for her future where she is planning on going to the University of Michigan and studying aerospace engineering where she then hopes to someday work for NASA. Something that most people don't know about Sabrina is that she has 7 pets, and can play four instruments! Sabrina is a very kind and loving person and I highly suggest getting to know her!

Students, we are sorry you will not be able to participate live! Tickets will only be available to parents of the participants. We are working on a live streaming option right now so that students and other family members of the players will be able to watch our meets and games. Once we have the details worked out, we will email information about how to access games and matches online. (Parents of members of the wrestling and basketball teams: Jentry Youd, our dean of students, will email you information next week regarding tickets to the games and links for live streaming.)

Based on the governor’s and Utah County Health Department’s recent decision regarding quarantines, here is the most recent information from the county health department:

  • Utah Department of Health allows you to end quarantine at 10 days instead of 14 days effective 12/3/2020.
  • You can be tested on day 7 of quarantine and if you test negative with a PCR or antigen test and do not have symptoms you can end quarantine before the 10 days.
  • If you have a household exposure you cannot test at day 7 to end quarantine before the 10 days. Your 10-day quarantine will start after last exposure to the positive case.
  • Please see attached flyer for further guidance.

If your child is currently quarantined due to an exposure here at school, please look for an email from our school nurse, Stacy Duncan, with your child’s updated quarantine dates. If you’d like to see current case counts throughout Nebo District, you can access the dashboard here.

If students were quarantined during basketball tryouts, they may attend tryouts on Tuesday, December 8, from 3:15 to 5:00. Please be sure to contact the coaches if you are planning to try out on Tuesday (shawn.rogers@nebo.edu or elizabeth.hylton@nebo.edu). In order to participate in tryouts, all paperwork, including a current athletic physical, must be completed in Register My Athlete prior to the tryout date.

Our student council is planning a spirit week the week before Christmas break. We’ll send the dress up days in next week’s email. Have a good weekend!

The Wonderful Ms. Wirfs

Article written by student reporters in the Yearbook Class

The start of the school year is expected to bring many new changes. For Mrs. Wirfs, this year brought a big change for her too! She switched schools and is brand new here at Springville Junior.

Mrs. Wirfs has worked in Nebo School District for 17 years. For the first 7, she worked as a support technician helping with various things like computers and reading, but for the last 10 years, she has been teaching elementary school! Nebo School District is in the process of transitioning 6th graders to be in middles schools, so when the previous school she worked at, Mt. Loafer Elementary, was no longer going to house the 6th-grade class she taught, Mrs. Wirfs made a switch. She felt this was a good time to start teaching secondary school since she had always wanted to give it a try. The good news is that Mrs. Wirfs has been so pleased with her decision and said, “Ms. Miley gave me all the best students in the school.” She is definitely loving her new job as an 8th grade English teacher here at Springville Junior. She loves interacting with students and how every day is different. What made Mrs. Wirfs want to become a teacher to begin with? Her whole family is full of teachers, so she knew wanted to be one too. She also has her cosmetology license, but she chooses to still do both. Teaching is what is most important to her and what she prioritizes.

“I just love my students and I will always accept them no matter what!” We are so happy to have Ms. Wirfs here at Springville Junior and glad she is loving it too!
