Dear SJHS parent and guardians:

I hope that this email finds you and your family well and healthy. I attended a principals’ meeting today at the Nebo District Office where we discussed the coronavirus (COVID-19). We reviewed information about COVID-19 as well as information from local health officials. Nebo District has collected some valuable resources and information here: http://www.nebo.edu/node/3071.

Nebo School District is in close communication with the Utah County Health Department. The Health Department makes decisions regarding public health and school dismissals and closures, and we will follow any guidance they give us. We are grateful for their work and expertise. As of right now, the County Health Department feels that we are safe to maintain a regular school schedule. If this changes, we will communicate with you right away.

If your child is sick, or if another member of your family is sick, please keep your student at home. Please encourage your children to increase their hygiene efforts such as washing their hands regularly.

Our custodians do a great job of keeping SJHS clean, and we invested in some new cleaning equipment earlier this year. We have an electrostatic sprayer that uses a disinfectant that is on the Environmental Protection Agency’s list of disinfectants for use against COVID-19. We have been using this equipment for the last few months and will  continue to clean our school so that our students will remain healthy. The well-being of our students and employees is our highest priority.

The Utah County Health Department communicated the following information to our superintendent: “Decisions about school closures will be made carefully, and with consideration of unintended consequences. Currently, children are not at high risk for getting severe illness. Not having children in school may increase community exposure, as those children may visit entertainment and other community venues.”

In Governor Herbert’s press conference earlier today the following recommendations were made for elementary and secondary schools:

- Continue holding school as usual.

- Starting March 16 and going through March 30, postpone any large group gathering such as assemblies or after school activities.

- Amplify health and hygiene efforts.

Based on the recommendations given during the press conference, we are postponing next week’s Super Knights Assembly, Quest Time Extravaganza, tennis matches, track meets, etc. Starting on March 16 and going through March 30, we will also postpone any large gatherings, such as concerts or plays, that would include members of the public.

Friday, 3/20/20, is the last day of term 3. In order to make up for February’s snow day, students will attend school on March 20. Students will be released at 1:55pm rather than 2:40 since the snow day was on a Monday. We will have a normal school day on Friday.

We care deeply for your children and will continue to communicate with you on a regular basis. If you haven’t already, please also read the email from Assistant Superintendent Scott Wilson. It includes additional information regarding COVID-19. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Tiffanie Miley
