Dear SJHS parents and guardians:
I hope that you and your families are doing well. We were saddened to hear last week that we won’t be returning to school this year, but grateful that we will return to school at a time when we can stay healthy and avoid taking risks. Our faculty and staff miss our students very much and look forward to the fall when we can all be together again.
I’m sure there are many questions concerning the end of the year, and I ask for your patience as we figure out the details in this ever-changing environment. In the next week or two we will send out more detailed information about the end of the school year, but for now, here are some basics:
1) We will continue with online instruction through the last week of school. As grades are finalized at the end of the year, Nebo School District is allowing students a choice regarding how their final grade in each class will be recorded on their transcript for fourth term this year. At the end of the term, students can choose to keep the letter grade recorded in SIS/Aspire OR move to a pass/fail grade. If a student chooses the pass/fail option, letter grades between an A and D- will be recorded as a “P” for pass. A “P” grade will count for academic credit and will not affect the GPA. We will communicate the procedure for choosing the grade as the end of the year approaches.
2) During the last week of school we will collect textbooks, classroom library books, calculators, library books, instruments, and Chromebooks. We will also communicate these procedures as the end of the year approaches. We are waiting for any post-May 1 announcements from the state prior to making any final plans regarding locker clean out and collection of school materials so we will have the most current physical distancing protocols in place for gathering all the school materials from our students to ensure their safety and health.
3) We will distribute yearbooks during the last week of school. As of right now, our publisher is planning on delivering books prior to the end of the year. Details will be forthcoming. We do still have some yearbooks available for purchase. Please email our finance secretary, Mrs. Davis (nanette.davis [at] nebo.edu), if you would like to purchase one for your child. She will call you to receive credit card payment for the yearbook over the phone. Please include your child’s name and your phone number in the email to Mrs. Davis.
We know our students are likely disappointed about not being able to return to school to see their friends and teachers. Our teachers are still hosting Zoom meetings twice a week to chat with students and answer any questions they may have. On Mondays and Wednesdays, the following classes are holding optional Zoom meetings:
- Band, Choir, and Orchestra at 9:00am
- Science at 10:00am
- English at 11:00am
- Career & Technical Education at 12:00pm
- Drama and Art at 1:00pm
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the following classes are holding optional Zoom meetings:
- Health and PE at 9:00am
- World Languages / Dual Language Immersion at 10:00am
- Math at 11:00am
- History at 2:00pm
If your child is struggling in their classes, please ask them to be sure to read the directions included in the online learning platforms and watch the instructional videos their teachers make. I would also invite you to have your child watch the video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dNPFuCxHoc) from the administrators and counselors that includes advice on how to be successful with at-home learning. Attending Zoom meetings is probably the easiest and quickest way to receive the best help from their teachers.
Teachers are updating SIS two or three times a week, and in some cases daily. If students turn in assignments late, it will take the teachers a few days to get to those assignments because they are grading the current work first. Please encourage your children to be patient.
