Ann Marie Humble: A Poet at SJHS

Submitted by tara.pina on

Last year, Ann Marie Humble submitted a poem contest for students in the United States and Canada.  Excitingly, her poem, “Washer,” was picked from thousands of entries along with nine other students.  Ann Marie is currently a ninth grader at SJHS.  The contest she entered her poem in is for students in grades K-12 and the winners were based on their grade division.  Each of the Top Ten winners, including Ann Marie, gets a complimentary copy of the poem/writing and a $25 dollar check.

Ann Marie says, “When I actually found out that my poem was selected, I was really excited!”  Mrs. Riggs, her creative writing teacher, says, “At first, I didn't realize that she had won the grand prize. Then when I found the enclosed check I got very excited. I went around telling all the administration, secretaries and teachers I could find to tell them the good news.”  According to Ann Marie, she decided to write her poem when she was bored in English.  She wanted to write a poem about kids and friends and then decided to write about how her and her friends met when they were little.  “Ann Marie's writing is always detailed, deep, and whimsical. I may not know if her stories will make me laugh or cry, but I know her writing will make me feel something. That is a great gift to have as a writer,” says Mrs. Riggs.

Every writer is different and every writer loves writing for a different reason.  Ann Marie says, “I like writing poems because there is not structure, and you can write whatever you want.”  Mrs. Riggs says, “I love to have a way to express myself, especially in ways people don't expect. Being a writer allows you to be anyone. Bad guy, good guy, male, female---anything!”  If you like writing then you may want to take creative writing next year.  According to Ann Marie, you should take creative writing because it is fun, you get to just write for 45 minutes, you can enter your writing into contests and there are cool ideas!

Congratulations again to Ann Marie Humble!  SJHS is so proud of you!  If you would like more information about her poem and would like to see the actual poem, you can read a “Teen Poet” by Mrs. Sheppard by going to this page: http://sjhs.nebo.edu/news?page=1
