Are you ready for a challenge in 9th Grade honors math and English?

“A lot of people think  honors math and English are way too advanced for them, but truly it’s not much harder than regular math or English.  You just have to put more time into it,” Tyler Johnson, a ninth-grade honors English student, said.  This year at Springville Junior High we have a lot of students in the honors math and English classes. Mrs. Rice, a ninth grade honors English teacher, said, “Anyone in this school can be in honors English in ninth grade, but many are not; and the reason why they are not isn't about intellect, it is about taking up the identity of a person who wants to learn to care about learning, rather than merely finishing assignments and accumulating points.”  Many students said that they took this class so they will have their college credit.  Lydia Austin, a ninth grade honors math and English student, said, “Since I took biology it was a requirement that I took the honors subjects.”

The students at SJHS said that the classes are fun and enjoyable; they are a little bit harder than just the regular math or English class. Matthew Peterson, a ninth-grade English student, said, “Everything is basically the same, but the tests are harder. They give out more worksheets, and you have to put a lot more time into your work and make sure it is perfect.” The students feel like the math assignments are huge, but they said that it is a lot more helpful when the tests come. Gunther Snodgrass, a ninth-grade honors math and English student said, “They are really fun classes, you are around people who want to achieve the same things as you.”

All the students encourage the seventh and eighth grade students to try to get the guts to sign up for the honors classes, so they experience what it is like when you get into high school and college. Lydia Austin, said, “Honors math is the bombdiggity.”  Mrs. Rice said, “ Honors students are open about their goals for higher education and that makes them pleasant to be with.”
