In the epic battle of reading and watching TV the students of Springville Junior High, more often than not, choose to read instead of watching the big screen!  Ever since the TV has come into our world people of every nationality have had to choose where their loyalty lies.  While the TV can easily be chosen as the favorite, some people just can’t choose between the two.  For many years now parents have mostly approved of reading which may have more sway in the kids opinion of books and movies than they realized.

The first question that the students were asked was Book or Movie, and why.  Jane Wilson, a ninth grader at Springville Junior, proclaimed, “Book, because they are more descriptive and you can connect with the characters better that way.  It allows you to imagine and visualize what is going on in the book.”  Another ninth grader named Jacob Gee said the it really depends on the book or movie.  He goes on to explain that while the Harry Potter book is better he would rather watch the Lord of the Rings movie because the book is boring.  Laurissa Blakey, an eighth grader, confessed, “Books because they describe thoughts and feelings of the characters better than a movie.  Books are also the more correct version seeing as how they were made first.”

Max Whipple, an eighth grader, said, “No my favorite book does not have a movie and I am happy it does not, because it would ruin the story.  The other thing the movie would not do is correctly portray the character unlike the book.”  Lilli Killpack, a seventh grader, said that her favorite book does not have a movie, but that she likes the book because it is descriptive and the movie does not do that very well.  Gibson Condie, another seventh grader, simply stated, “Not yet, my favorite book is Michael Vey and it is really interesting and fun to read.”  Jacob Gee said that his favorite book is Harry Potter and he feels that the movie was really well done when compared to the book.

Laurissa Blakey said, “My favorite movie came after the book and it is Lord of the Rings.  I like it because it is really funny, it has good special effects, and the characters are good.”  Gibson Condie said that his favorite movie is Emperor's New Groove and that it came before the book.  He later goes on to explain that it is his favorite because, “it is really funny.”  Jacob Gee states, “My favorite movie came after the book and it is Percy Jackson, and I don’t know why, but I just like it.”

When asked what movie was most well done compared to the book Jane, Max, and Gibson all said that they believed that the Harry Potter movies were well done.  One of the main things they said was the movie left things out, but it was still well done.  Jacob said, “Because it is based off of facts from the books, the third Lord of the Rings extended version that lasts five hours is the most well done.”  Laurissa said the she thinks Holes is the most well done out of books compared to movies because her sister said that the lines are almost exactly the same.

When asked if they would rather sit around reading or watching TV only one student said that they would rather sit around reading instead of watching TV.  Two out of the six students said that they would rather watch TV because it is more relaxing and reading makes them dizzy.  The other half of the students said that it solely depended on their mood.  Now think about it when faced with the dilemma of choosing movie or book would you go to the big screen or the small box?
