As some of you probably know, the Master Singers get the opportunity to go and sing about a BYU men’s basketball game every year. Mrs. Utrera, the choir teacher, says “This started 4 years ago when BYU sent out an email asking schools to sign up to sing. It was perfect timing because I had decided that Master Singers would learn the National Anthem that year and have it ready to use if we ever needed it. That year was the 200th anniversary of the National Anthem so it was the first thing we learned that year. We were ready and able when the invitation came to sign up and get a slot.  We have been privileged to be invited back each year since then. It has become a great tradition.”

This year was pretty different according to Christine White, a ninth grader girl. She says, “We didn’t do quite as well as last year, even though we have more people.” As for being ready, Amanda Gardner says she thinks they are because the National Anthem is an easier song to learn. Mrs. Utrera also says, “They are definitely ready for this performance. They have worked hard to learn their parts. There are always things I can find to improve on, but usually just getting up in front of the audience brings the improvements that I want to make.” So you could say they were ready and did well.

As most things, there are favorite parts and least favorite parts. The excitement of lining up to go on and sing, with the possibility of a camera being on you, was Christine’s favorite part. Amanda says, “My favorite part was before we were going to sing because a bunch of my friends and I played games and got food!”

So all in all, the trip was a success, and hopefully they get invited back to sing again next year. Good job Master Singers!
