The Big Competition

These past few weeks Mr. Shields, a history teacher, has been busy. He has had to teach his eighth grade history students all the names of the states. To help them with that, they played a little game quite similar to ‘‘Around the World’’. Each student would take a turn standing up to compete against another student while Mr. Shields pointed to a state shown on the projector. Whoever said the name of the state first, won and moved on. This game lasted for about one week. Mr. Shields finally narrowed it down to his “sweet sixteen,” as there were only sixteen contestants left. They were: Brinlee Paystrup, Natalya Love, Aydan Marshall, Tani Foster, Trevor Ollerton, Katie Britt, T.J. Roberts, Dallin McNeese, Nate Allred, Moroni Wright, Saane Mavae, Abbie Smith, Brynn Dinkel, Jaymon Jordan, Madi Fowler, and Jake Pritchard. One by one they were eliminated leaving Mr. Shields with four students. These students names were, Katie Britt, Natalya Love, Brinlee Paystrup, and Moroni Wright.

“It was really fun, and I liked that I got into the final four,” said Katie Britt, an eighth grade student.

“It was really successful, and I think competition is good at school, because it motivates kids to do their best,” said Mr. Shields.

As each of the final four took turns battling each other, one by one they were eliminated, leaving only two contestants: Brinlee Paystrup and Natalya Love. These two girls both did very well in the competition, but the final winner was Brinlee Paystrup.

“I think they had fun, and learning is fun so this was one way to make it fun,” said Mr. Shields.

All in all, the students had fun and knew the states better than they did before. Doing this competition proved successful, fun, and way worth the time.
