Bread and Circuses

An SJHS English teacher, Mrs. Maughan, gave her ninth grade students a chance to stand in the spotlight. In ancient Roman times entertainment for the people was called “Bread and Circuses.” In middle school terms this entertainment is called skits or plays.

“I want students to be able to adapt a story and comprehend it as a group,” said Mrs. Maughan.

After reading the Odyssey, and learning about Greek and Roman mythology, they put on plays depicting the stories. They were required to take the story and change it into a script. According to Mrs. Maughan, they were then required to present it to the class.

“Most of the students seem to enjoy it.  Everyone enjoys watching, but a few students get stage fright when they have to perform their own play.  This is a very fun unit for me and for the classes,” said Mrs. Maughan.

“I did ‘The Weaving Contest’ for my play, and it was pretty fun,” said Kaylie Paynter, a student in Mrs. Maughan’s class.

Ninth graders all around love this exciting, new way to learn about ancient times. All the world’s a stage!
