Jazmin Valdivia, a student in the dance class class at Springville Junior High, is very interested in dance.  Jazmin dances because she loves it. “I dance cause it’s a form of art, and I love all types of art,” said Jazmin.  Jazmin started dancing when she was six years old, and still is going.  Justino Lopez, also a student attending dance at SJHS, is loving dance class.  “I like the dances that I’m learning because the teacher, Mrs. Maughan, is very awesome, and I think that they’re really active,” said Justino.  Justino chose dance as an elective because he wanted to get better at dancing.

Students are now very excited to go to the school dances because if they hear a song they’re practicing to in class then they would be glad to dance and show others what they had learned.  Right now the students are learning a jazz dance and so far, students are loving it. The reason why SJHS has decided to have a dance class, was for students to have more opportunities to do what they love, and dance is one of the things students love.

Mrs. Maughan has been dancing ever since she was three, which means she’s been dancing for 23 years.  Mrs. Maughan danced at Espret De Corp studio, and then Heart-and-Soul studio.  “After my dance training I was on the high school cheerleading squad, song leading team, dance company, and drill team,” said Mrs. Maughan.  After that Mrs. Maughan coached drill teams and taught at dance studios before she got the chance to teach dance here at SJHS.

Students are saying that if there is any teacher that could teach you how to dance, it would be Mrs. Maughan. Students that attended Mrs. Maughan’s dance class say that they have gotten better at a certain type of dance, just by being in Mrs. Maughan’s dance class.
