On Monday April 25, eighth-grade students in Mrs. Luke’s Foods Exploration class were visited by Allison Fiscus. She taught the students about pigs and even made samples of pork for everyone to try. Alison Fiscus also goes by Lady Ham or the Pork Lady. She is the promotion and communication director for Utah Pork Producer. Mrs. Luke, foods teacher here at SJHS, said, “We were learning about protein, and I thought this might be a fun way for the students to learn more about it. They also get good recipes from it.”

The kids learned that there are different cuts on a pig. Some cuts are healthier than others like the low-fat cuts. They also learned how the pigs in Utah are raised. According to Lindsay Johnson, eighth grader here at SJHS, she learned that pork comes from the pigs back. She also learned that they use pig skin for many different things. Sean Tedrow, eighth-grade student, said, “All the meat is edible and there are many sections on a pig. There’s bacon, ham and pork chops.” Lady Ham made students a sample of “very yummy” portabello mushroom pork chops, according to the students. The kids also had a chance to win prizes including a piggy bank! WE LOVE PORK!
