Lifestyles in Samoa

Submitted by tara.pina on

I, Anya Keil, have spent most of my childhood roaming the dirt roads of Apia, Samoa. This small island has so many treasure coves of memories for me! I spent a little over 8 years here until I moved to America with my mother to live in Utah. Utah’s where I’ve been for the past 6 years. I have not been back since I was 7 and a half! That’s a long time without seeing your family! Anywho, I am back finally, reporting from my home in Apia!

One thing I have noticed is that the police control here is very loose, especially on the streets! There are huge fish markets where there are people and cars making their way through. ITS CHAOS! I have never seen a collision in any of my years living here. I think that’s saying something.

FUN FACT: My family owns a TV station and the only lotto in Apia.

People here usually speak Samoan or broken English. When people who live here speak English it’s usually a little slurred (not in a bad way), or have an accent. It’s hard to explain over text but all Samoans have a Samoan accent. It’s very loose and a lot of times end their sentences on a high note.

FUN FACT: Dwayne (the Rock) Johnson got big and buff at my uncle's gym! Dwayne is a close family friend.

Samoa is a very traditional place. Family values are a huge part of our lifestyle. Elders are respected and fed first, if not then you get yelled at! Babies usually walk around with just a diaper (or on extra hot days they walk around with nothing at all!) because the temperatures here can reach extreme highs!

FUN FACT: The Keil family was a royal family back in the day of kings and queens.

Samoa is a kind of like Hawaii but minus all the hotels and pollution. We have beautiful beaches and exotic, delicious food! All together Samoa is just an amazing place with wonderful people.
