Mrs. Riggs Students Write Creatively!

Submitted by jennifer.dunn on

Mrs. Riggs teaches the Creative Writing class here at SJHS during first period. Mrs. Riggs has been teaching for four years, and this is the second year she is teaching Creative Writing.  She decided to teach Creative Writing because she knows how helpful it is to have someone else look at your work and give honest feedback, and she loves to write herself.

The students in the class enjoy it. According to Kimberly Bartholomew, an eighth grader, she likes that she has free range of her writing. She also likes that she gets feedback from the other students and Mrs. Riggs. Paige Simpson, a seventh grader, said, “My favorite part about it is that I get to write what I want.” According to Paige, she took the class because she likes to write. AnnMarie Humble, an eighth grader who took her class last year, said, “I liked writing science fiction and realistic fiction.”

Mrs. Riggs loves teaching Creative Writing, since writing is a passion of hers. Mrs. Riggs said, “This year we started doing walkabouts which lets us go outside the classroom to write. You can find all sorts of writing ideas when you change your perspective.” During the semester, the students vote on what genres they would like to write about, then they have class instructions and examples. The students have up to two weeks to write, revise, edit, and share their short stories on their blog. According to Mrs. Riggs, students that take Creative Writing tend to improve their writing.

Mr. McGuire, the principal, said, “I think Creative Writing is a great class. Students who write well do better in all subject areas. This class helps promote that.”  According to Mr. McGuire, he thinks the students are unique, and that Mrs. Riggs does a great job.

Thank you, Mrs. Riggs for teaching our students how to write better!
