Dear SJHS parents and guardians:

School has changed a lot since I started teaching at Springville Junior High in the fall of 1999. In the past few years we’ve seen many technological advances that our students are used to because they hear about and interact with those technologies on a daily basis here at school. Since you are not here with them everyday, I wanted to share some information that I hope will be helpful as you help your student navigate this year while we are particularly reliant on technology to help deliver instruction to our students at school each day and keep them up to date when they happen to be absent. I’m sharing a handful of videos that explain the different tools students are using each day, as well as showing examples of what those tools look like. Each video is only a few minutes long and will give a really good overview.

We have a new student information system this year (Infinite Campus, or iCampus). For the last several years we have used Aspire, but it was not going to be supported by the state much longer, so the district needed to find a new student information system. This process started almost two years ago. Student Information Systems (SIS) store student information, including grades, attendance records, parent contact information, and more. Our new SIS can be a great communication tool to help students and parents have a better idea of what is going on in each of the student’s classes. Since registration is now completely online, all parents and guardians already have an iCampus account. You will use the same account you created during the online registration process to access information about your student’s attendance, assignments, grades, class schedule. You can access iCampus from the district website on the parents menu, or by clicking here. There is also a mobile app for both parents and students.

This year two learning management systems are being used throughout the secondary schools in Nebo District. A learning management system (LMS) is software that is used to create, deliver, and manage educational content. An LMS allows teachers to assign, review, and grade student work; it also allows teachers to upload instructional videos, slideshows, and link to content for students to learn from. Google Classroom and Canvas are the two learning management systems students are using this year at SJHS. Since the beginning of the school year, teachers have specifically taught students how to access Classroom and Canvas, how to navigate each LMS, and how to submit assignments. Additionally, teachers have organized their classes in a very similar way to make it easier for students to find the information they need, regardless of the class.

Each student in the district is assigned an email address, which comes along with a suite of tools from Google. Google recently created several videos to share with parents.

There are several other tools teachers use on a regular basis to help deliver content to their students, such as Nearpod, EdPuzzle, Padlet, Flipgrid, Socrative, Screencastify, Loom, Kahoot, and many more. Our teachers have worked hard and are constantly innovating and learning new things so they can meet the learning needs of their students.

I hope that these videos and explanations are helpful. With all these online tools it’s kind of funny to think back on my time as a student and realize that I didn’t know what my grades were until my parents got my report card in the mail. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we learn and navigate these new waters. We care about each of our students and appreciate their resilience in the face of this unique school year.

We are still so happy to be back in person each day and are grateful that our school has been so healthy for the past six weeks since school started. Thank you for your support in keeping your students home when they are not feeling well, or when other members of your household have been sick. We feel like it really has made a difference.

Take care,
