SJHS has many sports to offer, one being girls basketball. Girls basketball is offered to all ninth grade girls; it started at the beginning of November and goes to the beginning of February. The team practices every day (except game days) from three to five, and on Wednesdays from two thirty to four thirty. The team includes 13 girls:  Jessey Simons, Taralyn Gervais, Megan Nusink, Avyrie Fellows, Brielle Cruz, Erin Call, Cayla Giles, Danielle Hartness, Kaitlynn Broderick, Sam Atkinson, Lynn Bereton, Grace Ashcraft, and Nikiah Jones. The coaches are Ms.Brennan, our very own history teacher here at SJHS, and Ms. Merrell, a special education teacher here at SJHS.

“I played for three years in high school, two at Lone Peak and my last year of basketball in California,” Ms. Brennan said. She is excited to be the first ever SJHS girls basketball team to play in the new gym and have new uniforms.

Ms. Merrell has been playing basketball for all her life. She said, “I started in the world of basketball when I was born. My dad was the basketball coach at the high school where we lived and he coached for 21 years (in all). I grew up in the gym, it grew to be a passion and love for me. I went to basketball camps starting at age 5 and continued to do so up till my junior year of high school. I stopped playing my senior year due to injuries and other reasons, but still loved/love the game. It teaches you life lessons you can't really learn anywhere else.” According to Avyrie Fellows, a ninth grader, said she is very excited for the basketball season and said they have a good team. She loves this sport and this is her fifth year playing basketball; she is a point guard.

The girls have games every week either on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. And has won their first game against Lakeridge. So come show your support to our outstanding SJHS Girls Basketball team!
