Students Perform at UVU Orchestra Festival

On Wednesday, May 7th, the SJHS orchestra classes performed in the Utah Valley University Orchestra Festival. The festival included orchestras from many different schools and took place at the UVU Sorenson Center in the Ragan Theater. The Springville students performed from 1:30pm to 2:30pm.

The purpose of this trip was to provide an opportunity for the students to go out and listen to orchestras from other schools. It was also an opportunity for students to be graded on how well they played. There were two judges watching all the students. They graded each orchestra on their performance and came down afterwards to give them compliments and tips on what they could have done better. All of Springville’s orchestras received great scores!

The classes left at about 10:30am (after a while of trying to fit all of the cellos and basses underneath the busses). They arrived at UVU, ate lunch, and watched some of the other orchestras play. The Orchestra I class played first, then the Orchestra II class, and then the Orchestra III class played last. Each class also had their picture taken by a professional photographer after they finished playing.

It was a very busy day for everyone, especially Dr. Tsugawa, the orchestra teacher-he had to keep track of all three classes at once while they were in different places: either performing, getting ready to perform, getting their pictures taken, or sitting in the audience. Everyone was able to finish out the day without any problems, and after another struggle with the instruments, the students started home and arrived back at SJHS around 5:00pm.
