When I Grow Up I want to Be...

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” is the inevitable question that all teens encounter. Some dread it, some take it on with a planned out answer, but no matter the circumstance, everyone must choose. In order to help out, Springville Junior High School’s counselors have invited parents to present about their career to the students in the library during Quest Time.

Ms. Droz, the eighth grade counselor, said, “The program was the brilliant idea of Mrs. Distefano [the seventh grade counselor]. We were thinking about putting together a career day and having many speakers come in to talk about their careers, but she realized that having the speakers come during Quest Time would give students the opportunity to hear from more presenters, as well as giving the presenters flexibility as far as scheduling.”

So far, there have been presentations on Aviation by Ken Sink of UVU, and Social Work by Terri Sawyer; many more are soon to come. According to Ms. Droz, there are plans for having a dental hygienist, radiologist, police officer, and a cosmetologist come. More information such as dates and times can be found on the school website: sjhs.nebo.edu/content/windows-workplace.

“I love teaching and talking about solutions that help people feel better. I also thought youth might be interested in becoming social workers since it is a well attended area of studies at the universities in Utah,” said Terri Sawyer, who presented on December 13th. “I can't guess how youth feel, but there were a few smiles and laughs, so I am guessing that some youth enjoyed it.”

The counselors welcome and encourage all students to attend.
