Ms. Brennan Makes Candy History in Utah Studies

Ms. Brennan, a history teacher, made Utah Studies exciting on September 10. She brought in candy to represent different landmarks in Utah. The class had already been trying to memorize this information, but Ms. Brennan knew from personal experience that sometimes memorization comes easier if food is involved. She said, “In the seventh grade I had to make a cell out of a sugar cookie, frosting, and use candy to represent the different parts of the cell. To this day I still remember all the parts of a cell because of that activity, so I thought it would be a fun way for my students to remember the geography of Utah.”

The class made Utahs out of graham crackers, and then frosted them putting landmarks in the proper places.

Adeline Walker, a seventh grader in Ms. Brennan’s class, said, “I enjoyed putting them together, and putting Lake Powell and the other lakes on it.”

Bethany Stewart, another seventh grader in Ms. Brennans’ class, said, “It was a fun way to see where places in Utah are.”

The candy turned out to be a very effective way of learning the landmarks of Utah. According to Adeline, putting it together herself was more helpful than the usual system of pictures and maps. Bethany said, “It stuck with me after that.”

Ms. Brennan felt that the activity was worth it. She said that many of her students did well on the quiz as a result of the candy Utahs.

The students also enjoyed eating the candy. According to Ms. Brennan they used Swedish Fish, candy corn, sour gummy worms, and cherry sours. Both Bethany and Adeline agreed that Swedish Fish were their favorites.

All in all, this was a great activity that benefited all who participated. Both students and teacher seemed to enjoy it.
