A Field Trip Worth Mooing About

On November 24, 2014 the Agriculture Science (Ag science) class here at SJHS journeyed to Ottesen Dairy in a quest to discover the sciences behind dairy production.  According to Mrs. Thomas, the Ag science teacher, the dairy is owned by her husband’s family.

Also according to Mrs. Thomas, after the class arrived at the dairy students visited different stations.  “Some examples,” she said, “of these stations are: the milking barn, baby calves, and everyone’s favorite- the milk tank.  At each of these stations we discuss what science is occurring.”

Previously, according to Mrs. Thomas, the students had made ice cream in class to get a taste of what dairy production was like.  “Now we are visiting a dairy to give them a glimpse into milk production,” said Mrs. Thomas.

According to Chloe Wimmer and Isaac Englund, two Ag science students, the best station was visiting the baby calves.  Chloe said, “It was fun to see all the baby calves.  It was especially awesome because there was a new calf just born that morning.”

At the end of the field trip all the students gathered at the milk tank station and were offered a drink of the raw milk. According to Chloe Wimmer, it was right from the tank.
