Do One Thing

Submitted by jennifer.dunn on

If you have not noticed already, there are maybe 200 black signs around the school, that have big white letters that spell out, “Do One Thing.” Lots of people see this piece of paper as a sign that is just hung around the halls. But a huge percentage of students look at it and think, today will be better than yesterday. It is not that hard to find one of these signs. They are in classrooms, in the halls, and on bulletin boards.

According to Madison Hone and Kylee Lealiifano for Halloween they got to make root beer cookies in Ms. Murray’s class, a food teacher, and made root beer in Mr.Bass’s  class, a science teacher. They enjoyed other people’s costumes, many were very creative.

For the second year at SJHS, the counseling center has been hosting a series of career presentations during Quest Time called Windows to the Workplace. All interested students are encouraged to attend and learn about careers that interest them.

Mrs. Droz, the ninth grade counselor at SJHS, said Windows to the Workplace is a place where they “invite parents and community members to come and talk about their careers.  They talk about how to get into their career, how much school and training they had to do, what kinds of things they do each day, how much money they can make, and how many jobs are available in their career right now.”

This year at SJHS new teachers have been added to the staff. One of these teachers is Mr. McCombs, a new seventh grade English teacher. This is Mr. McCombs’ first year teaching. “This is still my first year teaching, so in a way, I'm just a tiny fish in a huge pond called teaching. Sometimes it feels like I'm drowning in that pond, but at others, it's like floating on the top of the water with the sun on my eyelids,” said Mr. McCombs.

Even though this is his first year teaching Mr. McCombs, loves his job. He said that there are many students that make it fun. Even though there are ups and downs, he absolutely loves his job.

At Springville Junior High everyone likes to show that they are drug free. The week before Fall Break, October 12-15, was Red Ribbon Week.  Red Ribbon Week is only once a year.

“I have really liked the fun activities we had at lunch this year, and the dress-up days are always fun! I love seeing other teachers get involved,” said Mrs. Murray, a teacher at SJHS.

SJHS did an activity every day in support of Red Ribbon. On Monday the theme was "Don’t sleep through life! Get educated and be drug-free", and students wore pajamas to school.  On Tuesday it was "Stomp out drugs and wear your craziest socks!" and on Wednesday it was "Scare drugs away with crazy hair!"
