The girls’ physical education (PE) classes have started shooting for the hoop. On March 4, they started the basketball unit. The students have begun learning to shoot, dribble, pass, and how to avoid fouling the other players. According to Maryn Giles, an eighth grade girl currently in PE, PE is where you learn different activities to help you stay physically fit. The main goal of PE is to teach kids how to play sports and give the kids a class where you don’t have to sit still. Natalie Sumsion, another PE eighth grade girl, said, “PE exists to make kids get physically active.”

The PE classes play many different sports which includes ping pong, archery, badminton, pickleball, volleyball, disc golf, soccer, softball, football, and kickball. Carlie Maughan, one of Mrs. Anderson’s eighth grade students, said, “My favorite sport we play is badminton.”

Mrs. Anderson, the girls PE teacher, said, “Lots of kids like to play basketball, and it is easily accessible with six hoops and a gym. Anyone who wants to play on a team can play city league or we have both girls and boys basketball teams here at SJHS.”  According to Natalie Sumsion, the girls learn how to shoot, pass, dribble and do layups. The different classes have a lot of fun playing games in PE. According to Mrs. Anderson, the girls have fun, but at the same time they are learning how to be physically fit and active.

The PE class is mandatory, but most, if not all, students would choose to take PE anyways. Mikinna Mchoes said, “PE is really fun and it gives me a chance to stretch my legs after sitting in a desk all day.” Many girls have discovered a real love of sports through the PE program.  Maryn Giles said, “Usually I would never have tried basketball or many of the sports we play, but now that I have tried them I love playing. I also found out that I am pretty good. It also a very social class and I get to play with my friends. I love having PE in my schedule.”
