BYU Students Visit Apprentice Orchestra Class

How would you feel if you learned how to play an instrument when you have collage students learning with you?   Well that is what happened with the seventh graders in Dr. Sam Tsugawa’s orchestra class.  Cody Page, a member of the seventh -grade apprentice orchestra class, said, “It’s nice to learn with students who are learning with you.”

The BYU students are working to be teachers. They know how to band instruments, so they are getting to learn a string instrument as well as the orchestra class. Sarah Smith, a member of the eighth-grade orchestra class, said, “I think the BYU students will be great teachers because they have good opinions.”   The BYU students come every Tuesday and Thursday to the seventh-grade orchestra class and teach for about 5-10 minutes.

The junior high orchestra has two levels in seventh grade. One is the apprentice class, where they are just learning, and the master class, were they have played for one or more years.  Tou Moala, member of the eighth -grade orchestra class, said, “I think it helped the apprentice class a lot.”  According to the orchestra students, they have been helped in some way by having the BYU students learning with them.
