Career Talk With The Counselors

It’s that time where the ninth graders have started getting serious about their future.  Many students have been thinking of what career they want to pursue when the time comes, and the ninth graders at Springville Junior High have been talking with Mrs. Linton, Mrs. Droz, Mrs. Distefano, and Mrs. Walker, who are all counselors at SJHS, about what path they should take.

Ninth grade students, their parents, and one of the counselors get together to discuss career choices, classes that can help them get on their way, and what colleges would be a good choice for them.  “During an SEOP meeting we will celebrate your successes, make a four year plan for high school graduation, and a plan for college and career readiness. We talk about your strengths, goals, and interests. We give you information about high school opportunities and requirements, exploring career fields, and post high school options,” said Ms. Linton, the ninth grade counselor.

SEOP means Student Education Occupation Plan, but according to Ms. Linton, statewide schools are changing the name to College and Career Plan. SEOPs are a time for any ninth grade student to ask questions that they may have on what classes to take in high school and/or college.  Also, the current eighth graders who, will be ninth graders next year, will start to have meetings with the counselors at the end of the year to select some high school classes that they might want to take and get introduced to college plans.  “It’s getting me excited for high school and college,” said Ana Jimenez, a ninth grader at SJHS.
