Exploring the Constitution

Eighth grade students in Mr. Shields’s history classes at Springville Junior High  are learning about the “very basic foundation of our government today,” the Constitution. To learn about this important piece of our history, the students are making a brochure advertising the Constitution and what it represents.  “The Constitution enabled the people of our country to be free from an oppressive government which would limit the people’s rights,” said Mr. Shields, the history teacher who is conducting the project. He hopes the assignment will help his students further understand the Constitution and why it is so important to our history.

According to Mr. Shields, the project is to create a pamphlet that will advertise the Constitution as well as provide the important main parts of the Constitution. The project should include a title page with a catchy phrase and three more pages explaining the main parts. Blake Johnson, an eighth grader at SJHS who enjoys being in Mr. Shields’s class, said, “Doing the assignment will help me study for the test and helps my grade.” The assignment is the biggest one due this semester and lots of time should be put into it.

The brochure should look very neat, colorful, and should represent the Constitution itself in a patriotic way. According to Ceci Sumsion, an eighth grader in the class who has already completed the assignment, “to get the project done on time, you have to be organized and put lots of time into it.” According to Paige Cook, another eighth grader in the class, “Doing the project helped me learn what the six goals of the Constitution are, which helped me understand everyday life much better and I can see things from a new perspective.” The history project was due this Friday, March 8th. Mr. Shields is excited to see the pamphlets completed and see what his students have came up with to represent our history.
