Field Trip to the Corn Wagon Quilt Co.

The eighth-grade sewing students took a field trip on Friday, February 15, to the Corn Wagon Quilt Co., in Springville.  They were able to see many things while visiting the quilt store.  According to Mrs. Bird, the sewing teacher, the purpose of this trip was so the students could see the projects a quilting store does.  Visiting the store helped the students see some of the options they could have if they decided to have a career in textiles.  The students  saw an embroidery machine and a machine that puts holes in the fabric, that are later used to crochet.  Chloe Dean, an eighth-grader in sewing, said that they learned “how people made quilts.”

The class was able to watch the women at the store demonstrate their machines.  The students got to experience the use of a machine quilter, which a Corn Wagon employee operated free-hand.  She explained to the students that she made up the designs, sketched them, and then went to work!  Megan Gashler said, “A lot of [the quilts] looked like art.”

According to Mrs. Bird, this field trip was a good experience, and she would definitely do it again.  Mrs. Bird also said, “I wanted [the students] to see that art work could be in a different form.”  Megan Gashler said, “It was really cool!  I loved it!”
