January Super Knights are Awarded

Submitted by tiffanie.miley on

Another month has passed at SJHS, and we had the Super Knight Assembly on January 25th.  Students were excited to find out who won the Super Knight award. The Super Knight award is an award given to students at SJHS at the monthly Super Knight Assembly.

The students who are recognized have followed the school’s traits, followed them respectfully, and have also tried their best in their class work and in their everyday lives. According to Mr. Mikesell, the Dean of Students, the award and assemblies are “a way to honor students and also reinforce things that we want all the students to do.” The school gives out the award “as a way to reinforce values that are important and to honor some of our students.” Students are nominated by the faculty at SJHS and then the faculty votes upon which students they think deserve the award.

We would like to congratulate seventh graders Sarah Tucker and Kazdin Lewis, eighth graders Becca Hammond and Derek Petersen, and ninth graders Anna Gurney and Jonathan Haws. Sarah Tucker, the seventh grade Super Knight, said, “I was so excited to be Super Knight I wanted to jump out of my seat and dance!”  Derek Petersen, the eighth grade Super Knight, said, “Getting called for the award was just plain awesome. It motivates me to keep being who I am, and keep doing what I do.”

Teachers said the following about these students:

Sarah Tucker

  • The best way to describe Sarah is effervescent and amazingly cheery.  I don't think there's been a day this year when she didn't bounce into class and greet me.
  • She respects her teachers by always participating and showing her enthusiasm to try her best. This shows courage and a great desire to succeed. She not only wants herself to succeed, but she loves seeing others' success as well.

Kazdin Lewis

  • Kazdin spends his time very productively and I can always count on him. Kazdin is one of those student you never have to worry about, he is going to do what right every time in all situations. He is always willing to do what is ask of him and is always going to give his best.
  • Kazdin is a great representative for our school. He is hard working, polite, courteous, smart, responsible, and just a great kid overall!

Becca Hammond

  • The thing I like about Becca is her enthusiasm.  She always comes to class eager to learn.  She's a student who's very driven to succeed.
  • She has the intrinsic desire to do well academically.  She is a self-starter, helps out with class discussions, and always does her best.  She is kind and grateful.  She is very deserving of this award.

Derek Petersen

  • Derek is a great kid; he always has a positive attitude that lifts me up.  He is one of the pure friendliest kids I have ever met. He goes the extra mile in whatever he does. He has a kind heart that I can tell is a great friend. He's one of a kind.
  • He always strives to do his best.  He is eager to stay on top of his assignments, and is very responsible.  displays great citizenship and is very thoughtful. He is very deserving of this award.

Anna Gurney

  • This student exceeds expectations every single day.  She works hard, values her friends and finds satisfaction in doing a good job.  I was thrilled to see this student named a Super Knight.  She is deserving of this award, because she is, in fact super!
  • Anna is a great representation of a Super Knight.I trust her to do anything I ask with the knowledge that it will be done well, and she is persistent.  She is a kind and deserving young lady!

Jonathan Haws

  • Jonathan always works very hard in class. He asks questions and is excited to learn. He is friendly to those around him and always wants to help.
  • Jonathan is very self driven student.  He works super hard to complete his work and maintain his grades.  He pays attention to his grade percentages and if they are getting close to an A- he gets extra credit from teachers to keep his grade where he wants it.  He is pleasant and respectful to all.  Jonathan is accepting of all people and emulates tolerance.

The SJHS ninth grade orchestra played at the assembly also. They worked long and hard to get the songs just right, Mr.Tsugawa explained what each song was about and what it means in different cultures. Becca Hammond, the eighth grade Super Knight, said, “[the orchestra was] amazing! I can’t believe some the kids that started in seventh grade didn’t even know how to play!” Seventh grade Super Knight Kazdin Lewis said, “They did really good and played cool songs from different cultures about coming together.” The Super Knight assembly is a great way to honor students at SJHS and honor the students that are brave enough to show how hard they have worked for what they do. According to Mr. Mikesell, “Even if someone isn’t selected to be a Super Knight doesn’t mean they aren’t great. We appreciate all of our students!”
