Mock Trial Club Argues to a Win

Submitted by tiffanie.miley on

You may have heard by now about something called Mock Trial. Mock trial is a club at SJHS that anyone can join. A common misconception is that it is age restricted to ninth grade, but anyone in the school can join. Mock trial is led by Mr. Hansen, a history teacher at SJHS.  He said, “It is a simulation of a real court case, and we compete with other schools. There are fake lawyers, fake witnesses, and real judges.”

Carter Call, a seventh-grade mock trial member, said, “Mock Trial is kind of like a fake court, we need to study our case, and practice our parts for when we compete against another team. One side of the case is prosecution, they need to make the defendant look guilty.”

The people who take mock trial really like it. “It’s great fun, and it’s cool to get to do this stuff,” said Isaac Clark, a seventh grader. Mr. Hansen said, “I think it’s very intellectually stimulating, and it’s very cool that I get to see these kids present themselves, and see their accomplishments, and seeing their knowledge on the subject go from little to very knowledgeable.”

Our school lost by a hair in their first competition. “It was neck and neck,” said Mr. Hansen. “They did a really good job. They really could’ve come back.” Jackson Stewart, a ninth grader at SJHS said, “I wish we could’ve won, but I know we did our best. It was so close though so I’m not too disappointed.”  The mock trial club competed for the second time on March 8th and scored a resounding victory.  All three judges unanimously agreed that SJHS was the winner.

We would also like to thank all students that were a part of Mock Trial: Carter Call, Adam Wight, Bob Gabbitas, Jed Barker, Jackson Stewart, Henry Rawle, Peter Kucharek, Isaac Clark, and Kaylee Middlebrook. “They definitely represented the school well,” said Mr. Hansen.
