Students who are not understanding math or having trouble with math, there’s no need to fear! Mrs. Meredith Sabey is here! Mrs. Sabey is the new half-time math teacher at Springville Junior High School. Her job is to help students with math when they are struggling.

“I teach a math intervention for seventh through ninth grade. It is a class that helps students get more practice with certain math concepts they might be struggling with. We work on assignments in class, and I help students understand the concepts a little bit better,” Mrs. Sabey said. Mrs. Sabey started working here the third week of school and she teaches fifth, sixth, and seventh period.

Students get into her class by their math teacher seeing that a student does not understand or is struggling with the concept they are learning. The teacher recommends Mrs. Sabey’s class to the student and the student’s parents. The student then decides if they want to take intervention math class as one of there classes instead of an elective. If they do then they talk to the counselor and see if it works with their schedule.

“Students take the math intervention class for two weeks in place of one of their electives. At the end of the two weeks they return to their elective class and a new group of students begins the math intervention class. We have each new group of students rotating between the grade levels,” Mrs. Nilsson, a math teacher at SJHS, said. This class is very helpful to the students in it.

“It really helped me catch up in math and my grade went up a lot!” said Samantha Rasmussen, an eighth grader at SJHS. When Ms. Sabey sees that the student is improving and understands the concept she says they don’t need to be in this class anymore. The students then can have their elective class again. They go to the counselor to get their original schedule back. This class is great and really does help now and gives the students the help they need. Students now understand what they didn’t understand!
