Pajama Pants? At School?

Mrs. Bird’s eighth-grade sewing classes at Springville Junior High are sewing up pajama (PJ) pants. From the first week of February to the twentieth of February, the sewing students have been hard at work with their projects. The purpose of the sewing classes is to teach students how to sew. Chloe Wilson, an eighth grade girl at SJHS, said, “Mrs. Bird gives us projects to do and you choose the fabric to make them. I love adding my own little bits of design to my work.” Mrs. Bird, the sewing teacher at SJHS, said, “The sewing class is my favorite to teach.” Some of the other projects the class makes are aprons, drawstring bags, stuffed animals, and more.

This past month Mrs. Bird has had a student teacher from BYU, named Ms. Black. Ms. Black said, “I like teaching the sewing classes because it is always an adventure. The PJ pants are a good way to teach basic sewing techniques and it is a good way to introduce the sewing and serging machines.” According to Mrs. Bird, the PJ pants aren’t difficult but it makes for a good first project. The purpose of the PJ pants is to make something fun that they can wear, and it teaches students measuring. The pajama pants take between ten and fourteen days depending on how good the students are at sewing and the difficulty of the style of pants. Carlie Maughn, a SJHS eighth grade girl, said, “It is kind of hard, but Mrs. Bird is always there to help you.”

Mrs. Bird said, “We like to teach sewing so the students can do something with their hands and enjoy themselves. It is a different form of art.” According to Carlie Maughn and Chloe Wilson, it is fun to express your creativity with the fabric you choose and how you embellish it. Ms. Black said, “Everyone and anyone should take sewing. Both boys and girls would enjoy it.”
