On January 31, 2013, the seventh graders at Springville Junior High were able to take a field trip to the State Capitol in Salt Lake. Mr. Hansen, a history teacher at SJHS, and Mr. Hatfield, a science teacher at SJHS, arranged the outing so that the seventh graders would be able to see how the government makes the laws that we have in Utah.

Mr. Hansen said, “Teaching about the Utah State government is part of the Utah Core. This experience gives the students a firsthand experience with the legislative process. They got to experience a tour of the Utah Capitol, and Avyrie Fellows’s father pulled some special strings to let us see where he works at the administrative office of the governor.”

The field trip lasted most of the day, and the students ate lunch while they were up in Salt Lake. Avyrie Fellows, a seventh grader at SJHS, said, “We got to learn about the state government and how it all works. It was cool to have my dad show us what he does there.” Brayden Parker, a seventh grader at SJHS, said, “Mr. Hansen and Mr. Hatfield invited us to go, and we got to see the state legislators establish the laws. I had a really good time, and I got to see the whole capitol.”

According to  Mr. Hansen, a history teacher at SJHS, Springville legislator Francis Gibson and his interns went out of their way to make this experience meaningful to the kids and because of that, lots of the students enjoyed the trip.
