SHS Winter Guard Visits SJHS

What in the world is winter guard? Well, winter guard is a competion dance group for high school students. Students will learn how to dance and skillfully spin flags. They might even learn how to rifle! They also have other equipment such as sabers. Winter guard has two seasons. One of the seasons takes place during summer and fall with the SHS marching band. It is called color guard. The other one takes place in the winter. (Hence the name “winter guard.”) Each year the team decides on a song they will dance to for the rest of the year. They will go and work on their dance, until it is perfected. This year the song they have chosen is “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me” by Cher.

Winter guard is just starting, but they do have a clinical for any ninth-grade girl or boy that is interested in winter guard. At the clinical, students will learn how to get a feel of the equipment and how the guard runs things. During the year, the winter guard will have several competitions. They performed at Springville Junior High School on Tuesday, December fourth during Quest Time.

Winter guard is a fun and creative way to compete and dance. Kara Dunn, a member of the winter guard team, said, “I’ve been doing this for four years now, and I can’t imagine what high school would have been without it.” Makaiah Williams, another member of the winter guard team, said, “When I first started guard I was a timid freshman. Through the friendships that I have gained I have been able to come to the person I am today. Guard gave me confidence.”
