SJHS Mural Brings School Spirit

Knights are asked to protect the weak, defenseless, and helpless. They are sworn to uphold the values of courage and honor.  As Springville Junior High Knights, these things are expected and wanted in students’ actions towards each other and themselves. As a representation of our school and its mascot, Mr. Mitch Cudney, art teacher at SJHS, and SJHS students reproduced the painting of a knight and a lady, entitled "God Speed," painted by Edmond Leighton. Mr. Cudney said, “I decided to paint a new mural because I wanted to paint something that was fun to look at and that showed school pride. I chose that specific painting because it represented both boys and girls at the school.”

Last year the mural took 400-500 hours and there were about 150-200 students that helped paint the mural. One student especially was Sarah Cheney, ninth grader at SJHS, who said, “It was fun working on the mural. There were so many little pieces, but overall it was worth the time.”  Mr. Cudney also said, “I’m very happy with the outcome of the mural. It turned out very well, and I made sure that it was done with caution, detail, and quality materials.”  Mr. Ken Van Audal, principal of SJHS, said, “The mural is fascinating to me. I love the colors. I love that students helped create it. I would like the halls to be filled with original works by our students.”
