Springville Junior High School Freshman Basketball Teams Announced

Freshman boys and girls basketball tryouts were held on November 7th and 8th.  The following students made the freshman boys’ basketball team: Britain Patten, Kenyon Jepperson, Tyson Galbraith, Nik Grosland, Sam Graves, Omar Garibay, Brandon Merkley, Skyler Spencer, Tristan Bradley, Andrew Creer, Preston Adams, Ryan Gage, and Coleman Lindquist. The following students made the freshman girls’ basketball team: Annie Anderson, Susie Suazo, Melanie Anderson, Ellis Bennett, Addie Bowers, Anna Bunnell, Sarah Clark, Talauna Davenport, Morgan Fulkerson, Jackie Gurtierrez, Andalyn Hall, Yolandy Leilua, Olivia Money, and Stacy Stapel. 

Kenyon Jepperson, ninth grader, said, “I love basketball because it’s the greatest sport on the planet, and it gives me an adrenaline rush when I play.”  

The coaches for the boys’ basketball team are Jimmy Watts, head coach and Mr. Chambers, assistant coach and health teacher.  Mr. Chambers played basketball and baseball at BYU and Jimmy Watts played basketball for Weber State University. Coach Watts earned the awards of all-time leading rebounder and fourth leading scorer. In 2003 he was inducted into the hall of fame at Weber state. He also came to Springville and organized the Simply Basketball camp. The girls’ basketball coaches are Mrs. Mitchell and Jill Gurney.  Mrs. Mitchell played basketball for Springville Junior High and Springville High. She graduated from SHS in 2008 and just finished student teaching in Mr. Chambers’s classes.

Starting November ninth practices will be held everyday, and the season will start on November 22nd. The school policy to be on a sports team is students can not have a GPA lower than 2.5, and students can not have any D’s or F’s.  If a students grades slip they will be suspended from the team until their grades go up.
