8th Graders Get Groovy In English

Students in eighth-grade English classes at Springville Junior High started to read the book Schooled around mid-March. Last year an eighth-grade English teacher suggested the book for eighth graders, and now its a part of the eighth-grade English classes at SJHS! “Schooled is a fun, engaging book that teaches students about tolerance and being themselves,” said Mrs. Bass, an eighth-grade English teacher at SJHS.

Students learned about why hippies came to be, what they did during the 60’s, and some students have already began to read ahead in the book!  “Hippies are cool,” said Angel Ramirez, an eighth grader at SJHS.  In Mrs. Canar’s English class, students were even able to do some tai chi during their classes!

In Schooled, Capricorn (the main character) begins to introduce tai chi into his school, along with other hippie traditions, and by the end of the month he has over 20 students doing tai chi with him out on the front lawn of the school!  He also starts a tie-dying clinic in the art room at his school.   According to Mrs. Bass, she thinks it teaches a good lesson that bullying isn’t cool.
