BYU Student Teachers Join Mrs. Gleave’s Class

When you are trying to become a teacher, it can be very hard to get an experience with students in a classroom.  Usually, you have to learn on the job.  But sometimes, college students get the opportunity to come into classrooms and learn from what the teachers do.  We now have two such teachers here at Springville Junior High.  Their names are Ms. Gardner and Ms. Rowley, and they are BYU students looking to become math teachers.  They are here at SJHS to teach and learn in Mrs. Gleave’s room.  According to Ms. Rowley, BYU asked Mrs. Gleave if she wouldn’t mind “mentoring” a couple of student teachers from BYU, and Mrs. Gleave agreed.

According to Ms. Gardner, the main things the student teachers do are plan lessons, lead class discussions, help students around the room, and grade homework.  “They help us around class, and sometimes they’ll teach the day’s lesson,” said Graidin Burns, a ninth grader at SJHS.  Another one of the most important things that the student teachers do is observe what kind of things Mrs. Gleave does with the students in class.  “It’s really cool to actually get a hands-on experience in a classroom,” said Ms. Rowley.
