Children Around the World

Many Students at SJHS have traveled and lived in countries outside of the United States. They have been to Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Canada.

Tessa Larson, a ninth grader at SJHS, has been to six different countries in Europe- specifically England, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Scotland.

“In Spain they eat at different times. All of the stores are closed from four to seven so they can eat and then all of them go back to work at eight,” said Tessa. She tried a lot of different food including tripe, snails and frog legs.        Tessa also said that it was hard because everyone spoke a different language and if they did speak English it was hard to understand because their accents were so strong. “It was weird because I thought everyone had a different accent but really I was the only one with an accent, an American accent,” explained Tessa.

Christian Small, a seventh grader at SJHS, went to Canada with his dad and he said it was a really cool and different experience for him. “I went to Toronto, Canada which is sort of like Canada's New York because it’s not the capital but it is a really big city.  The biggest difference is all the different races. It was cool because one of my best friends came from across the world.”

Christian also said that in Canada they had a little section in all of the schools where a French teacher would come in with her little cart and teach the whole class French.

Another thing that was different for him was that there was no grid system and all the roads were just like a big bowl of spaghetti and it was hard to get around.

Joel Emmet, a seventh grader, has been to Israel, Jerusalem, Egypt, Jordan and, England because his dad is a BYU professor and was teaching in those places.Joel said, “The coolest thing was the pyramids. They are A LOT bigger than you think; you can see them from super far away.”He also said there was a lot of fighting in Jerusalem because three different religions all believed it was holy ground. He then said that there are a lot more religions than in Utah; because in Utah there are only two to three main religions.

So you see that our students have been to many fascinating places around the world. Hopefully we all can visit somewhere different someday.
