The Common Addiction

Procrastination, that is the common addiction. Everyone has procrastinated at least once. Procrastination is putting something off for another time. Most of the time it is because people want to do something else, or are avoiding the problem at hand for different reasons.

“I procrastinate because I either don’t want to do something, or I’m nervous,” Jane Shoemaker, a student at Springville Junior High School, said.

“I don’t want to do things immediately; I want to do what’s fun,” Karissa Reedy, a student at SJHS, said, expressing another common reason people procrastinate.

Teachers even procrastinate sometimes. Ms.Neeley, a teacher a SJHS, said she procrastinates “because I’m usually avoiding something.”

Other teachers do not procrastinate. “I don’t have the time,” said Mr. Anderson, a math teacher at SJHS.

To get back on track, and stop the procrastination, some people need to have someone tell them to stop, or to do something. Others have (or need) a schedule they stick to. Some people have an alarm set, or just wait for the deadline. “People just need to realize that it’s easier to do the work in the first place, and not let it stack up,” said Mr. Anderson.Technology also has a role in procrastination. “Technology is a huge distraction. I’d say that’s where a lot of the problems come from,” said Mackenzie Huston, a SJHS student. Whether it is Facebook, or Pinterest sometimes people push back what they need to do for the social media, or video games.

Procrastination also can have a huge effect on a persons grades. “They either rush through it, or don’t do it all together, and they get a zero on that assignment,” said Ms. Neeley.

“Once all the work stacks up, we just give up on education,” said Mr. Anderson. “It comes from the lack of experience and bad habits, and maybe just wanting to take the easy way out.”

“It makes your grades drop, and effects you later on in life, because old habits die hard,” Said Mackenzie.

“Only procrastinators procrastinate,” Mr. Anderson said.
