The District Poetry Slam

Students from SJHS were selected to perform at  the Districts Poetry Slam based on their performance at the SJHS Poetry Slam. The participants from our school were: Olivia Brown, Abby Kawai, Chloe Potter, Zoe Dalley, Jackie Durfey, Conner Widfelt, and Sara King.

Ms. McBride, an English teacher for seventh and eighth grade, said, “A poetry slam is an opportunity for students to perform poetry. It's not just memorizing a poem and reciting it--it is performing it with expression, rhythm, and feeling.”

Students performed in alphabetical order and were judged based on their performance. While the judges deliberated about the winners the participants were given a prompt "Don't Judge Me," and had the opportunity to write an original poem and perform it.

Sara King, an eighth grade student who competed, said, “Poetry is an art of passion.”

Ms.Dunn, an English teacher, said, “It's a great way for students to get involved and express themselves. Many students write and perform original poetry, which I think is really neat. We have so many great poets and performers at our school!”

Abby Kawai, a eighth grade student, said, “I got to meet new people and try something new.”

Congratulations to Zoe Dalley and Olivia Brown who both placed in the top ten out of 38 participants from Salem Jr., Payson Jr., Spanish Fork Jr, and Springville Jr.
