Fun Food Friday!

Ever wonder where ice cream came from?  Or where the story of Johnny Appleseed originated from?  In the eighth and ninth-grade foods classes at SJHS, students have been given the chance to learn about some of the most common foods, and where they came from, or their history.  Some foods they have learned about this year in both foods classes are ice cream, apples, jello, chocolate, and donuts!  “It's a fun way to learn about a food and to celebrate the end of the week.  The kids earn the days with good behavior and clean kitchens,” said Mrs. Luke, a foods teacher at SJHS.

The students make the food they are learning about and get to play games with them too.  For example, the classes learned about apples and got to play games to win apple suckers or apple juice; and they also watched a movie on Johnny Appleseed.  According to Ana Jimenez, an eighth grader at SJHS, students get to eat yummy food and hang out with their friends.

In Mrs. Luke’s and Ms. Fausett’s classes, the students get to learn how to make waffle cones during the ice cream lessons and are able to make mint chocolate ice cream themselves, and they also got to make apple crisp and eat it with ice cream!  “We have Fun Food Friday because it is a fun day to teach the students about apples and ice cream.  The history is amazing, and it is good to have the students learn about specific foods, and where they come from, and what they do for our bodies,” said Ms. Fausett, another foods teacher at SJHS.   Fun Food Fridays are about two to four times a semester, depending on how well the classes do.
