Harry Potter Speaks Chinese

Mrs. Debra Wells, a Chinese teacher at SJHS, and her first period Chinese class recently made a short film and sent it into the Utah Foreign  Language Film Festival (UFLA). Mrs. Wells’s Chinese class usually sends in a poster each year, but this year the UFLA asked schools to submit a short film.
According to Mrs. Wells, before they made the video, she passed out small slips of paper with Harry Potter characters on them. Then the students would stand up and introduce themselves as that character speaking Chinese.

To come up with the plot of the video, students recommended ideas and then voted on which idea they liked best.  Bethany Allen, a ninth grader at SJHS, said, “The video was a Harry Potter theme, and there was a student who has cast a spell on the whole class to make them speak Chinese. Then all the students in the class were interviewed by other students playing teachers.”

When the Chinese class was done filming the video, they sent it into the UFLA. “Even though we didn’t win, my class and I had fun filming it, and we are proud,” said Mrs. Wells.
