For the past ten years, the honors English teacher, Mrs. Rice, has shown Springville Junior High a different style of teaching that has helped her students improve and excel in reading and writing.  Mrs. Rice said, “Teaching English gives you the chance to do deep philosophical thinking and take a stand on many moral and ethical issues.”  Mrs. Rice has a Bachelor’s Degree in English and a Master’s Degree in Teacher Education.

On January tenth, Mrs. Rice will be starting a new chapter in her life. Traveling across the country, Mrs. Rice and her husband will be attending the University of Kansas to earn their doctoral degrees.  One of Mrs. Rice’s life goals has always been to get a doctorate degree.  Mrs. Rice will also be teaching classes at the university about linguistics.

In order to get her Ph.D., Mrs. Rice will have to take two years of classes, and find an idea of what to study.  Then she will have to write a dissertation on the topic she studied.  The topic Mrs. Rice has chosen to study is the reading and writing of adolescents who come to this country as immigrants and have to learn English in school.  According to Mrs. Rice, you can’t write about what people already know, you have to use what is already known to find out something entirely new.

Mrs. Rice has been somewhat of  a role model for her students.  According to Danny Salazar, a ninth grader, Mrs. Rice is good at using big words, modeling her coat, and has a great sense of humor.  He also is intrigued by her life stories and thinks that they need to go in a book.

Mrs. Rice said, “I wish all my students, their parents, and my colleagues good luck.  I hope they all get to acquire the education they want for themselves and that they can meet  all of their other life goals as well.”  According to Mrs. Rice, her favorite thing about teaching is that she gets to learn.  Getting her doctoral degree will open up space for her to pursue questions that interest her.  She is also looking forward to being able to spend time with her infant daughter Hannah Stephanie Rice.
