Hope Squad Members Helping to Prevent Suicide at SJHS

Submitted by tiffanie.miley on

Hope Squad is ready to heal the hearts of students at Springville Junior High School. This year, the SJHS counselor who started Hope Squad was Mrs. Courtney Droz. She came up the idea of Hope Squad to help out troubled students at SJHS. The letters in hope stand for Hold On Persuade Empower, which is what Hope Squad is all about.

According to Clarissa Scott, eighth-grade Hope Squad member, you are elected into Hope Squad at the beginning of the year by your peers. SJHS students wrote down three names of people they think are best qualified to represent out school and are easy to talk to in a time of crisis. Mr. Trent Mikesell, one of the Hope Squad advisor, said,”Hope Squad is all about raising awareness about suicide prevention and to help students feel included in what goes on around here.” Cassie Buhler, eighth-grade student here at SJHS, said,“Hope Squad is all about sugar spice and everything nice, plus we get to do stuff for the greater good.”

This is Hope Squad’s first year helping the school, and according to Mr. Mikesell and the Hope Squad members, the year’s not over and neither is Hope Squad. Hope Squad having fun and  they’re already so active in the school. Hope Squad’s just getting started and their not ready to stop just yet.
