It’s Raining Pennies at SJHS

“It’s cool to think you can help a little kid with just some pennies,” said Kenzie Keane, an eighth-grade girl at SJHS. This year at Springville Junior High, we partnered up with Springville High School to raise money for the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

Make-a-Wish is a foundation that help kids with cancer have their lifetime wish come true. This year SHS and SJHS are helping a seven-year-old boy named Connor. Connor has leukemia and has had many different treatments. When you're on these treatments your body hurts so bad, so Connor wished for a hot tub. SJHS  helped the cause by doing Penny Wars.

Penny Wars was a great way to earn money for Connor. Each grade tried to earn the most pennies for their grade by donating. Students could bomb the other grades with nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollars. For example, say a seventh grader added one hundred pennies to his grade’s jar, that equals one hundred points for seventh grade. But then an eighth grader adds two quarters to the seventh grade jar; then the seventh grade will lose fifty points.

Penny Wars started on November 8th and ended on November 16th. Everyday at lunch there was a table set up with three jars. Penny Wars only lasted for a few days but lots of students donated.  SJHS raised two hundred and sixty nine dollars to contribute to Connor’s wish. The ninth grade won, but the eighth grade earned the most money. This was a great opportunity for SJHS to help Connor.
