Joining the Springville High School swim team is a great way to get in shape, set goals, and make friends according to a several ninth graders at Springville Junior High. At SJHS, only ninth graders can join the team, but it is worth the wait. Matt Duncan, a ninth-grade swimmer, said, “It’s fun, and you get buff!” The practices are after school at the Springville pool. The swimmers are working hard to make sure they are ready for their upcoming meets.

The SHS swim team has a good chance at placing in their state meet this year. They have had much success in the past. According to Halle Acor, another ninth-grade swimmer, one of her goals is to make it to the state meet. In order to qualify for this meet, you must make specific times for each event. The team also has many swimmers who have swam on a club team before. Those swimmers give the SHS team more experience, and they sure can swim fast!

Most of these swimmers have been swimming since they were very young. Some swimmers started to swim because their mom signed them up for lessons when they were very small. Most of the club swimmers have older siblings that influenced them in their decision. Abbi Morris, an eighth grader who is planning to join the team next year, is currently swimming on the club team, Utah Valley Aquatics. Abbi got her start from her older sister. Her sister has a skin condition that requires her to exercise. But, she needed a sport where she couldn’t be injured. Swimming is fun and safe!

One of the best parts about swimming is meets. Matt Duncan likes swimming the 50 freestyle. Abbi Morris likes the 200 breastroke. Halle Acor likes mid-distance and I. M. (individual medley) events.

“It’s fun to watch my improvement and be with friends,” said Abbi Morris. High school students can hangout with friends and they get to be named an SHS athlete!
