Kids At SJHS Get Green Hands

Submitted by tiffanie.miley on

For one day at Springville Junior High, some students hands were dyed green. These students are all in the Agricultural Science class and members of the National FFA Organization. These students were awarded with the Greenhand award. This is a National FFA degree for all first year FFA members. The students can earn their Greenhand Degree by completing a list of requirements. These requirements include being in an Agricultural Class, attending FFA activities, having a plan for a project, and lastly, learning the basic knowledge and history of the FFA.  This is the first of many degrees that students can earn as they progress in the FFA.  Through progression in the FFA, students can earn a Greenhand, Chapter & State FFA Degree, and another accomplishment is that about 3% of FFA members across the United States earn their American FFA Degree.  All of these degrees require involvement in the FFA and agriculture. It is a great accomplishment to achieve these degrees.  This a great award for first year members.

Mrs. Giffing, the FFA teacher, said,  “On November 27th, we held a green-hand breakfast celebration, where the students were able to dye their hands green and eat green eggs and ham. Then we held an awards ceremony that evening with their parents.” Ben Stewart, a FFA member at SJHS, said, “I felt really accomplished when I got my award. It felt really nice.” Kelty Cope, another FFA member, said, “We got to paint our hands green and put them on a poster. Then we ate green eggs and ham.” James Smith and Jackson Stewart both agree that the green hand ceremony was fun and that it felt rewarding to be able to put their own handprints on the poster.
