Latinos In Action

You may be wondering, what is Latinos In Action?  Latinos In Action is a new class at Springville Junior High this year, taught by Mr. Beebe, the Spanish teacher.

Diana Arellano, José Ayala, Maricela Barajas, Yaira Espinoza, Angeles Gaitan, Liz Guzman, Ana Jiménez, Michael Lopez, Daniela Melendez, Karen Rivas, Sebastian Roibal, Nathaly Torres, Veronica Uribe, and Karen Uvalle are all students in LIA.

The class does many things, mostly para-educating, or tutoring struggling students, at Brookside Elementary.  They walk over to Brookside Elementary twice every week to help students out.

“On days we're not tutoring, we talk about what we're doing to help the students we're tutoring and how they're progressing.  We also learn character education.  We talk about relationships, attitude, responsibility, citizenship, self-discipline, goals, conflict resolution, respect, and financial responsibility,” said Mr. Beebe, the Latinos In Action teacher at SJHS.

The LIA class also helps out with translating for Spanish-speaking parents during parent-teacher conferences at Brookside, and helps advertise dances at SJHS.  According to Jose Ayala, a ninth grader in LIA, he enjoys helping people, and his community.

Later in the year, the class will be doing some service projects, and they will also be going to a conference at UVU for all Latinos In Action students in Utah.
