Learning about Surrealism in Photography

Submitted by tiffanie.miley on

Students in photography were recently assigned a new project called Surrealism. This type art was created in Europe 1930’s and was first done in paint. According to Mr. Mitch Cudney, art and photography teacher at Springville Junior High, these photos can turn out to be crazy, zany, and fun when they are finished.

Surrealism is a type of art that students edit pictures into a different picture; there is usually a main background with small copied pictures pasted on top of the background picture.  Students use the program GIMP, an editing program, to edit their pictures. Students can do one amazingly imaginative picture, or two to four good pictures. Students can use their own pictures or ones off the internet, the finished photos must be original or interesting to pass.

“This is the most fun project we have done all semester!” said Kristin Rasmussen, an eighth grader at SJHS. This assignment has been going on for about two weeks; photography students will be working on it for another week or so. Students have enjoyed working on this project; it has been a lot of fun.
